
Placed Employee Apprentices
As part of the response to the Leitch Review the
- Full-time education at school or college
- Work-based learning such as an apprenticeship
- Part-time education or training
Young people will still be able to work in businesses, providing they are engaged in at least part-time education or training.
Placed Employee Apprenticeship (PEA) schemes allow 16-18 year olds to meet the legal requirements of the proposed legislation whilst providing a cost-effective way for businesses to employ young people who are broadening their skills base.
Who are Placed Employee Apprentices?
PEAs are usually individuals aged 16-18 who will:
- Work towards an industry-recognised qualification while at work
- Work 5 days per week (not exceeding 37.5 hours per week)
- Be employed on a fixed term contract
- Be on a Contract of Apprenticeship that classifies them as a “worker”
- Be paid a minimum of £80 per week* with reimbursement of travel expenses (e.g. bus pass) normally required
*Protocol Skills recommends a minimum weekly wage of £100 per week (VAT is chargeable on any training allowance).
